Determining “small parameters” for quasi-steady state

چکیده
For a parameter-dependent system of ordinary differential equations we present a systematic approach to the determination of parameter values near which singular perturbation scenarios (in the sense of Tikhonov and Fenichel) arise. We call these special values Tikhonov parameter values. The principal application we intend is to equations that describe chemical reactions, in the context of quasi-steady state (or partial equilibrium) settings. Such equations have rational (or even polynomial) right-hand side. We determine the structure of the set of Tikhonov parameter values as a semi-algebraic set, and present an algorithmic approach to their explicit determination, using Groebner bases. Examples and applications (which include the irreversible and reversible Michaelis-Menten systems) illustrate that the approach is rather easy to implement. MSC (2010): 92C45, 34E15, 80A30, 13P10.

Enzyme Kinetics Far From the Standard Quasi-Steady-State and Equilibrium Approximations
Analytic approximations of the time-evolution of the single enzyme-substrate reaction are valid for all but a small region of parameter spsce in the positive initial enzyme-initial substrate concentration plane. We find velocity equations for the substrate decomposition and product formation with the aid of the total quasi-steady-state approximation and an aggregation technique for cases where ...
متن کاملA Determining Form for the Subcritical Surface Quasi-geostrophic Equation
We construct a determining form for the surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation with subcritical dissipation. In particular, we show that the global attractor for this equation can be embedded in the long-time dynamics of an ordinary differential equation (ODE) called a determining form. Indeed, there is a one-to-one correspondence between the trajectories in the global attractor of the SQG eq...
متن کاملRescue of the Quasi-Steady-State Approximation in a Model for Oscillations in an Enzymatic Cascade
A three-variable model describing the oscillatory activity of a cascade of enzyme reactions is analyzed. A quasi-steady-state approximation reduces the three equations to a system of two equations which admits only a stable steady state. This apparent failure of the quasi-steadystate approximation to describe the limit-cycle oscillations observed in the full, three-variable system is analyzed i...
متن کاملA remark on the number of steady states in a multiple futile cycle
This note studies the number of positive steady states in biomolecular reactions consisting of activation/deactivation futile cycles, such as those arising from phosphorylations and dephosphorylations at each level of a MAPK cascade. It is shown that (1) for some parameter ranges, there are at least n + 1 (if n is even) or n (if n is odd) steady states; (2) There never are more than 2n steady s...
متن کاملA Numerical Study of Drop Motion in Poiseuille Flow
The cross-stream migration of a deformable drop in two-dimensional Poiseuille flow at finite Reynolds numbers is studied numerically. In the limit of a small Reynolds number (<1), the motion of the drop depends strongly on the ratio of the viscosity of the drop fluid to the viscosity of the suspending fluid. For a viscosity ratio 0.125, the drop moves toward the centre of the channe while for t...
